Dr. Peter Mullen – Managing Partner

Peter is founding partner of Sunbird Images.

Since the age of 6 Peter started birdwatching and collecting feathers and other wonders of natural origin. After his collections got bigger he decided to study biology at the University of Düsseldorf. After finishing his masters in biology he started working on avian plumage coloration specializing in UV at the Alexander Koenig Research Museum (ZFMK). The ZFMK is a subdepartment of Bonn University from which Peter now holds a PhD. He is author of several scientific books. For two years, he worked as a business developer for the strategic consulting company Alcimed in Paris in the Life-science industry as well as the pharmaceutical industry.

In his pasttime Peter enjoys to be with his family including his two twin sons Scott and James as well as his daughter Lelayna. As a very social person he enjoys being with his friends and loves venturing into unexplored wildernesses around the planet. 

Peter is your person to contact for new projects be it apps or something else and takes care of general business development.

Dr. Georg Pohland – Managing Partner

Georg is founding partner of Sunbird Images.

Following a commercial training, he studied biology in Duesseldorf. He conducted research and field work all around the globe and completed his PhD in evolutionary biology in Bonn, Germany. After several years of freelance activities as a scientific consultant, marketing- and PR consultant, and project leader of a biotech start-up he is now in charge of business planning, contracts, HR, and administration.

Georg enjoys to spend his free time outdoors. He likes to go fishing, is a passionate hunter, and an enthusiastic hobby cook. He also loves his .44 Magnum, Norwegian Forest Cats, gardening, and playing video games.

Dr. Kirsten Mullen, MBA – Strategy and Marketing

Kirsten is part of the Sunbird management team and responsible for corporate strategy and marketing activities of the company.

Kirsten studied economic sciences in Germany and Spain and completed an MBA in Great Britain and USA. Following her studies she received a PhD on the analysis of strategic behavior of energy companies in the changing energy market. After working in the energy industry for several years Kirsten became part of Sunbird Images.

She enjoys running and swimming, loves Yoga and being outdoor in nature – by now she is able to identify the most common bird species in Germany by appearance and/ or their songs and calls.

Chris Greendyk – Head of Research & Development

Chris heads Sunbird’s Research & Development department and leads a team of developers across the globe.

He was born and raised in North Carolina, USA, and began studying Civil Engineering at the University of North Carolina in Charlotte for two years before moving to Germany in 2014 where he switched his major to Electrical Engineering at the Technische Hochschule Köln.

While looking to optimise Sunbird’s existing products software wise, he is responsible for pursuing new technologies to bring them to market as innovative creative products as part of the Sunbird portfolio. His personal favourite tech interests are Artificial Intelligence, Cryptocurrencies, Blockchain Smart Contracts, and Angular web development.

Apart from his passion for technology, Chris loves to go fishing and discover new spots to find the biggest fish, while thinking about new technologies to put to use in doing so…

Dr. Kari Küster – Project Manager AI

Kari studied mathematics with a minor in biology at the University of Tübingen where she also did her PhD on „Koopman operators“.
At Sunbird she is part of the Research & Development team where she uses her mathematical skills to continuously improve the application of Artificial Intelligence in Sunbird’s products. In addition to this she will support in the acquisition of research projects and is responsible for the business development of scientific institutions.
Kari has a passion for all kinds of sciences and especially likes to explore their historical background. She likes being outdoors, be it with a coffee on her balcony or for a walk or a hike in the Alps – and as a hobby ornithologist always with a lookout for any bird hopping or flying around. Apart from her passion for science and nature Kari loves classical music and modern dance. In her spare time she enjoys playing the piano or the viola, preferably making chamber music.

Nikolai Edeco – Project Manager AI

Jessica Langenbach, M.Sc. Biology – Content Manager Biology

Since early childhood Jessica is fascinated by everything crawling around in nature. She is always in the near of shrubs or the ground with her nose which frequently leads to amusement of family and friends.

Driven by her passion she studied biology at the Heinrich-Heine-Universität in Düsseldorf, where she passed her Master of Science. At Sunbird Images she is co-responsible for the content of various apps, manages part of the accounting and is on hand with help and advice for the customers.

In her free time, insects and other animals have to serve her as photo models, while she is also interested in birding. Jessica herself belongs the genus of night owls, she is socially-engaged and loves music and the fragrant Provence.

Karla Matosic – UX & Interface Design

Karla is the UX / UI designer at Sunbird Images, responsible for media design, image editing, graphics and interface design. She initially worked on individual projects at Sunbird Images and is now a salaried member of the Sunbird team.

She loves graphic design and works constantly to improve her skills also in her leisure time. A recent example is the creation of 3D modelling.

In addition to graphic design Karla uses her creativity in other practices such as baking cakes with unique and individual designs which also taste delicious! Since Karla is a registered nurse and has more than 10 years of experience in the general psychiatric acute care unit, every employee at Sunbird Images is in good hands in the event of a nervous breakdown.

Matthew Richard – Full Stack Developer

Mateo is a croatian based Full Stack Developer, working on Android, iOS and web applications. Before Mateo found his passion in programming he worked many different jobs such as being a waiter to even being a captain of a panorama boat which helped him understand about invisible underlying patterns. Mateo always had a love for technology and started fixing hardware already by the age of 6. This lead him to study at RIT Croatia where he got experience and knowledge about software development and many other skills, making him a one-man-army. With enough coffee he’ll be able to overcome any obstacle in his career. Mateo loves writing and photography ever since he was a kid and enjoys good music for relaxation.

Dennis Adamiec – Software Developer

Dennis joined Sunbird as a software engineer, particularly to advance the development of iOS developments.

Dennis has been working with computer software and hardware since he was 13 years old. Before making this his business, his passion for motorcycling led him to complete training as an automobile salesman with a focus on motorcycles. In his free time, he enjoys driving longer distances and enjoying the landscape and nature.

In order to provide his dogs with the best possible environment, he decided to move to a more rural area. There he enjoys the opportunity to take long walks through nature with them. He spends a lot of time designing and maintaining his garden and enthusiastically grows fruit and vegetables in it.

Guido Holzmann – Media Designer

Guido is a trained digital media designer. At Sunbird Images he is responsible for the design and organisation of different media. This includes the handling of image and sound data as well as the editing of film shots. Initially he worked as a freelancer for Sunbird before he became a salaried media designer as part of Sunbird’s core team at the beginning of this year.

He lives out his creativity in different media also in his leisure time – he has been playing the guitar in different bands for 30 years, composes and produces electronic music.

Furthermore, Guido is socially very committed. In 2004, for example, he went to South Africa to work on a farm and take care of socially disadvantaged children within a special project there.

Thomas C. John – Design & Strategy

In his teenage years Thomas started to get interested in entomology and began taking pictures of the micro world surrounding him. Thomas has studied physics at the University of Bonn and is an expert astronomer. Until this day he continues to be deeply interested in all scientific phenomena, and has a very good understanding of technical details and functionality of especially optical instruments such as cameras as well as automobiles.
In his free time Thomas enjoys creating content for his camera blog on Youtube, taking pictures with basically any camera that has ever been built where Thomas is able to lay his hands on. As a real foodie he loves going out and enjoys exclusive dining always eager to try out something new.
Thomas is a self taught designer and has worked on numerous projects for smaller and larger companies around the planet for the last 20 years. His logical thinking and profound knowledge of natural history topics such as entomology and paleontology makes him a valued Sunbird member carrying out tasks as different as scientific content creation, strategic consulting as well as design work.  

Tina Tomason – Graphic Designer

Tina is a croatian based graphic designer.

Following her passion for drawing, painting, and creating Tina studied graphic design and started working as a freelance designer creating strategic and compelling design solutions. While design remained her passion all along, she worked in accounting for a big fruit company in Croatia, before returning to being a designer full time.

Apart from developing new designs another passion of hers is photography. She also loves spending time with her family, preferably in nature.

Serena Landucci – Team Assistant

Serena is the team’s assistant, supporting everyone with administrative tasks and organising daily operations. She loves to look for opportunities to improve operative procedures and team efficiencies. As the first point of contact, she is also responsible for managing customer inquiries.

Serena is of Italian descent; her parents were born in Sicily. Serena is a trained health and nursing assistant, helping others is a matter of the heart, making her the perfect team assistant.

She is an absolute family person and loves to visit her relatives in Sicily, being at the sea and walking. Another passion of hers is baking – she enjoys nurturing the team with sweet delicacies at team events.

Fabian Karwinkel – Business Development Scientific Institutions

Fabian is Sunbird’s business developer for scientific institutions, aiming to evolve and diversify the company’s product portfolio and help scientific institutions to optimise their research applications  in order to achieve their scientific goals.

Fabian studied biology at the University of Münster, Germany, following his passion for biology. While being an ornithologist through and through, he is virtually interested in every animal and plant that comes in front of his camera or binoculars. At university, Fabian supervised many students on identification exercises in zoology and botany, and led numerous bird and plant excursions. He also works as a volunteer for an environmental NGO where he helps out on environmental education and advises the association on ornithological issues.

Fabian loves travelling (combined with birding, of course!), photography and sports like badminton, slackline or ultimate frisbee.

Joe Cockram – Ornithologist

Most of Joe’s current work is as an ornithologist on luxury expedition cruise ships. As part of the expedition team he delivers zodiac boat tours and landings, hikes, kayaking and onboard lectures and education in the most special places on Earth, from the Arctic to Antarctica, and everywhere coastal inbetween.

Joe usually carries a camera with him and enjoys wildlife photography. Rather than setting out and waiting to capture specific shots, he likes to simply record what he sees happening in front of him as he is out and about and occasionally gets some very satisfying images, though he remains very much a ‘keen amateur’.

Thomas Zimmermann – Business Development Non-Biological Products

Thomas supports Sunbird as a business developer for non-biological products and services.

Thomas completed an apprenticeship as an industrial clerk before working as an Area Sales Manager and Brand Category Manager for WMF, an expert in domestic consumer appliances. In addition, he completed a degree in Business Administration specializing in computer science.

Following his thrive for new challenges he now uses his skills to recruit new business for Sunbird.

Thomas enjoys playing chess, swimming, Geocaching and being outdoor in nature.
