Tailored to your needs
Since 2009, Sunbird Images has been developing custom mobile applications and digital tools in collaboration with more than 100 partners worldwide. In our early years, we focused primarily on licensing scientific content for integration into our framework. As the demand for customised solutions increased, we began developing complete applications tailored to the specific needs of our clients. Today, our work includes custom app development for research and conservation in cooperation with universities, research institutes, publishers, governmental organisations, conservation bodies, and private companies of various sizes.
Our commissioned projects cover a wide range of tasks. For example, we develop mobile and web applications, create AI-based visual and acoustic recognition algorithms, carry out citizen science initiatives, and design digital learning tools for educational environments. Additionally, many of these projects draw on multiple areas of expertise at once, including artificial intelligence, mobile app development, data architecture, taxonomic knowledge, and the design of software for scientific workflows.
Below are a few selected projects that illustrate how our custom app development supports research, conservation and public engagement.
NABU Vogelwelt
The “NABU Vogelwelt” app allows you to identify and learn about all bird species native to Germany. The app addresses every bird lover and nature enthusiast who cares about the protection of our nature and its diversity.
“NABU Vogelwelt” is the most downloaded app in Germany to identify birds.
SWAROVSKI OPTIK
dG Mammals
The SWAROVSKI OPTIK dG Mammals app is the only app that can automatically identify mammals.
It was developed as a collaboration between Swarovski Optik and Sunbird Images. In combination with the SWAROVSKI OPTIK dG device the app allows you to identify and map a total of 100 European mammals that can be observed in the wild.
In addition to the automatic recognition function the app enables you to share the observations you make through the SWAROVSKI OPTIK dG device via livestream with others.
Caterpillar Id USA East Coast
Based on David Wagner’s Princeton field guide *Caterpillars of Eastern North America*, this app serves as a practical digital companion for identifying common native caterpillar species in Eastern North America. It provides reliable visual reference material and concise identification information, making it easier to recognise species directly in the field.
All Birds Switzerland
This app provides detailed information on all 417 bird species recorded in Switzerland, including irregular visitors. It contains distribution maps, 2,002 high-quality photographs and more than 750 sound recordings. Users can map sightings with GPS, create personal observation lists, listen to bird vocalisations, or browse through the species accounts at their own pace.
The app was developed in collaboration with field ornithologists and ecologists with extensive experience in Swiss bird research.
BienABest
BienABest is a scientific project to preserve and increase the ecosystem service “pollination by wild bees”. The project, which involves various scientific institutions, is developing methods to prevent the drastic decline of wild bee populations.
